Galapagos hosts the first Ecuador-Israel Scientific Symposium

The I Ecuador-Israel Scientific Symposium, which will take place in Galapagos between Monday and Wednesday, tries to promote cooperation between the two countries after the declared intention of the president, Guillermo Lasso, to open a representative technological office in Jerusalem.

Called “Sustainability in the Galapagos Islands: XXI century and beyond”, this international meeting is organized jointly by the Charles Darwin Foundation and Tel Aviv University, and will bring together leading experts in conservation, environment and marine ecosystems from both countries .

This first symposium, which starts on Monday on Santa Cruz Island in the Ecuadorian archipelago, is part of the drive that the Lasso Executive is giving to the bilateral relationship with Israel, and in particular in areas related to scientific cooperation.

It seeks to strengthen collaboration and research between the academic sectors of the two countries on issues of relevance to Galapagos such as evolution, the environment, genetics, climate change, food security, invasive species and sustainability, among others.

Thirteen academics and experts from different Israeli universities, representatives of the Israeli Ministry of Environmental Protection and the Weizmann Institute of Science, such as the 2009 Nobel Laureate in Chemistry Ada Yonath, who will intervene with a recorded presentation, will take part in the event that will have place in the Inspiration Complex of the Charles Darwin Research Station.

On the Ecuadorian side, among other representatives, officials from the Charles Darwin Foundation, the Galapagos National Park, and the Governing Council of the Special Regime of the islands will participate.

Last month, Ecuador inaugurated a large reserve around the Galapagos in a ceremony that included the participation of international leaders who wanted to support a decision that represents another step in the establishment of the largest marine protected area in the Pacific.

The event was attended by the president of Colombia, Iván Duque, who announced last November that his country and Ecuador will share an innovation office in Jerusalem, a purpose in which they will share expenses and spaces.

This is the commercial office, but with diplomatic representation, that Duque inaugurated in Jerusalem on a visit he made to Israel in January, and that generated a protest from the Palestinian National Authority (PNA). (I)
