Vladimir Legoyda, chairman of the Synodal Department for Church Relations with Society and the Media of the Moscow Patriarchate, said in an interview with RIA Novosti that the church recognizes war as evil, but does not forbid “its children to participate in hostilities when it comes to protecting their neighbors and restoring justice.”

According to him, in such situations, war is a lesser evil than “a cowardly refusal to fulfill one’s duty to the Fatherland.” At the same time, Legoyda emphasized that the Russian Orthodox Church calls on Christians to strive for peace, and politicians to resolve acute painful issues through negotiations.

The conversation about the church and the war was conducted against the backdrop of the threat of war with Ukraine.

At the end of last year, the world media was filled with the topic of the alleged Russian “invasion” of Ukraine and the sanctions that should follow. Journalists wrote that a sign of “invasion” is the concentration of Russian military equipment in the regions bordering Ukraine. This was followed by numerous statements and publications about the impending sanctions against Russia.

Moscow, however, denies the allegations of the alleged “invasion”.
