The longest lightning was recognized as 768 km plus or minus 8 km, which was observed over the southern regions of the United States on April 29, 2020. The previous record in this “nomination” was registered in Brazil on October 31, 2018.

The longest lightning flash was recorded on June 18, 2020 over Uruguay and the northern regions of Argentina. It lasted 17.102 seconds plus or minus 0.002 seconds. Previously, the record was considered a figure of 16.73 seconds, which was recorded in Argentina during a thunderstorm on March 4, 2019.

Scientists remind that lightning is not only spectacular and beautiful, but also a very dangerous phenomenon. The deadliest lightning strike known to history killed 469 people. This happened in 1994 due to a lightning strike in an oil storage facility in the Egyptian settlement of Dronka.
