Eating a lot of sweets almost inevitably leads to weight gain, which is why many people decide to cut out sugar completely in order to lose weight, but don’t limit yourself in this way without preparation. This was stated in an interview with Sputnik radio by a nutritionist, director of the Dietetics Center Anna Melekhina.

According to her, a person, suddenly deprived of sweets, may feel discomfort, which some experts call “sugar withdrawal.”

“Sugar addiction has not yet been scientifically proven, so there is literally no sugar withdrawal in the literal sense of the word. But at the same time, people who consume a lot of sugar experience severe discomfort when they refuse it, as when breaking. A person may begin to feel a loss of energy because sugary foods were for him a source of carbohydrates, which, in turn, are the main source of energy, ”the doctor explained.

She noted that if you want to reduce the amount of sugar you eat and not suffer from withdrawal, then you need to find a suitable replacement for sweets.

“If you just take away sugar and don’t add anything in return, then there will be a carbohydrate deficit and an energy deficit. Our task is to increase the consumption of other carbohydrates while reducing sugar. I usually start with my patients by increasing complex carbohydrates rather than cutting back on sugar. A person allows himself to eat bread, pasta, rice and potatoes, which leads to a decrease in the physiological need for sugar, and he feels comfortable. If we take something away from the body, then this must be compensated. And it’s better to give first, and then take it away, ”Melekhina concluded.
