A group of scientists from Columbia University has developed a blood test method that allows not only to determine the biological age of a person, but also to predict the rate of aging.
According to the researchers, the structure of DNA formed the basis of the work. The test calculates the rate of aging from the epigenome, a collection of data about genes. It tracks changes in 19 biomarkers in various body systems, writes the Neurosciencenews portal.
According to the study, the researchers followed 1,000 children born between 1972 and 1973, tracking how their performance changed at different ages: when all participants were 0, 26, 32, 38, and 45 years old. This development helped to assess how quickly the body ages and what factors affect it. In particular, according to biological indications, those who lived in poverty, were involved in crime, and also became victims of mental, domestic or sexual violence turned out to be “older”.
Scientists claim that the test they created in the future can help determine what measures can be used to slow down the aging process in both young and elderly organisms.
