The president referred to the judicial process that sentenced the gendarme to three years in prison.
President Guillermo Lasso spoke again on Wednesday night in the case of the second corporal of the Police, Santiago Olmedo, who was sentenced to three years and four months in prison, for the crime of overreaching in the execution of an act of service for shooting down two criminals who tried to assault a minor, on June 11, 2021, in Riobamba.
Through social networks, the president addressed a message to the uniformed man, to whom he has expressed his support on several occasions:
“After Santiago Olmedo, his family and the @PoliceEcuador: For the moment, the end of the process will be awaited in the corresponding instances of the judicial system to proceed to search for ways that guarantee the freedom of this police servant. We back them up with facts,” Lasso posted on Twitter.

Hours earlier, at 3:17 p.m., the president spoke for the first time about the judicial process. He commented that “it is outrageous and incomprehensible” that a police officer who protected the life of a teenager is sentenced. And he said that “all the necessary support” will be given so that he regains his freedom.
Olmedo currently wears an electronic shackle on his left foot. After knowing the sentence, he announced that he will appeal the decision of the Court.
On December 1, 2021, Guillermo Lasso received the second corporal of the Police at the Palacio de Carondelet, in Quito. At the meeting, the agent explained his situation.
At that time, Lasso mentioned that his commitment as president is to support the National Police. (I)
My commitment as president is to support the @PoliceEcuador. I have spoken with Corporal Santiago Olmedo, he told me his story and I offered him my support in his case. As a government, we must demonstrate commitment to those who protect citizens and guarantee their safety. pic.twitter.com/nhwTg3Rles
