German Foreign Minister Annalena Burbock assured that in the event of an escalation in the situation in Ukraine, the German authorities, together with partners, would take “suitable measures” in relation to Nord Stream 2. It is reported by “Kommersant”.
The Minister also explained that the operator of the Nord Stream 2 pipeline does not yet fully comply with EU law, and therefore its certification has been suspended.
Burbock recalled that the coalition agreement stipulated that European law applies to energy projects in Germany, this also applies to Nord Stream 2. Now, in the context of this project, European law is not fully implemented, she pointed out.
“At the same time, we see geostrategic ties, otherwise we wouldn’t talk about it so much,” Burbock said.
At present, the head of the German Foreign Ministry is on his first working visit to Ukraine. She discussed with her colleague Dmitry Kuleba the construction of Nord Stream 2, as well as the diplomatic settlement of the conflict in Donbass and the holding of the Normandy format summit.
Earlier, Kuleba said that Russia “took a dangerous new course of escalation” last fall, and in this regard, Kiev is working with partners and allies to implement a comprehensive “package of containment measures” for Moscow. He clarified that this plan includes three levels: “strong de-escalation diplomacy”, the development of “painful economic sanctions”, and the deepening of defense cooperation with Ukraine.
At the same time, German Defense Minister Christine Lambrecht recently said that the launch of Nord Stream 2 should not be linked to the threat of a “Russian invasion” of Ukraine.
