In Kazakhstan, after mass protests in January, signs with the name of the first President Nursultan Nazarbayev began to be removed in different cities of the country, KazTAG reports.

Thus, in particular, the name of the foundation disappeared on the marble tablet in front of the Nursultan Nazarbayev Foundation building in the capital – the inscriptions “Nursultan Nazarbayev Foundation” and “Nursultan Nazarbayev qory” are no longer on it.

The indication of Nazarbayev’s authorship has also disappeared under the quote laid out in gold in the meeting room in the police building in Almaty – this was noticed in the photo from the meeting with the participation of President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev.

It should be noted that after the New Year, protests began in Kazakhstan – the protesters demanded a reduction in the price of liquefied gas. Later, the actions of discontent turned into riots and clashes with law enforcement officers, there are dead and wounded. The protesters demanded, in particular, the holding of new elections, consideration of the issue of lustration of people from the “clan” of ex-president Nursultan Nazarbayev. Against this background, the government of Kazakhstan resigned, First Deputy Prime Minister Alikhan Smailov was appointed acting head of the cabinet of ministers, and a state of emergency was declared throughout the country. President of Kazakhstan Kassym-Jomart Tokayev requested assistance from the CSTO. During the riots and later, more than 10,000 people were detained, according to official figures.

Nazarbayev was the first president of Kazakhstan from 1990 to 2019. In March 2019, he resigned, and according to the results of the early presidential elections, Tokayev won. Moreover, in April last year, Nazarbayev stepped down as chairman of the Assembly of the People of Kazakhstan, and in November he stopped leading the ruling Nur Otan party. On January 5, 2021, after the protests began, Tokayev removed Nazarbayev from the last key post of chairman of the Security Council of Kazakhstan and headed it himself. Nazarbayev himself has not appeared in public since December 28 last year.
