German experts called on the German government to “radically” change its policy towards Russia.
A letter from 73 experts on Eastern Europe and Russia, initiated by historian Andreas Umland, is addressed to the German parliament and government and published on January 14 by Zeit Online amid the crisis over Ukraine following this week’s talks between Moscow’s representatives from the United States, NATO and the OSCE on “ security guarantees” for the Russian authorities, according to the RFI portal.
The authors of the letter analyzed the recent steps of the Kremlin, which actually demands “authorities to terminate international law in Europe”, recalled the consistent growth of “claims” of the Russian authorities in the past and pointed to “serious mistakes in Germany’s policy towards Russia”, including “Berlin’s former purely verbal or symbolic reaction to Russian revisionist adventures.”
“Fundamental corrections must be made to the German policy towards Russia,” experts are convinced.
At the same time, the co-authors of the letter criticized the authorities of Germany, a country that, being “the largest economic force in Europe, has been watching the actions of the Kremlin for three decades, albeit critically, but mostly indifferently.”
