The State Duma supported the idea of raising the age of purchase of alcohol to 21 years. As Svetlana Bessarab, a member of the Duma Committee on Labour, Social Policy and Veterans Affairs, said, she fully agrees with this idea of fellow MP Sultan Khamzaev to introduce such a measure.
According to Bessarab, reports RT, comparing weapons that are given to 18-year-old guys in the army and alcohol is incorrect. She clarified that at the age of 18, “the body is still being formed.” And although 18-year-old guys serve in the army and they are given weapons there, one should not compare this with alcohol. “Because one thing (that is, weapons – approx. Rosbalt) forms a sense of patriotism and courageous qualities, and the other (alcohol) destroys the brain and physiological qualities of men and women,” said Bessarab. So she is only in favor of raising the drinking age to 21.
At the same time, Bessarab noted that it was difficult for her to evaluate Khamzaev’s proposal to limit the sale of alcohol on weekends. She suggested that anyone who wanted to drink at home on the weekend would simply stock up ahead of time. And the ban will only help working bars.
