What does the state of exception against crime mean in Ecuador?

President Guillermo Lasso spoke on the night of this Monday, October 18, about the security problems that the country is going through. With this, he declared the state of exception nationwide, for 60 days, to allow the Armed Forces to join the work of the National Police in the streets, especially in nine provinces, among those Guayas.

“The levels of insecurity that are devastating the country are what originate this new mechanism in search of counteracting insecurity,” added President Lasso.

According to Dr. Augusto Durán Ponce, the state of exception is a extreme measure during periods of disturbance, anxiety, disturbance of order, natural or man-made threats that affect the public security of the State.

The military will complement the functions of the National Police and will carry out control, registration and requisitioning of weapons or drugs. “The Armed Forces will at all times act in coordination with the National Police,” the document states.
