US Senator Rubio proposed to impose sanctions against SWIFT if the banking system continues to provide services to Russian organizations

Member of the US Senate Committee on Foreign Affairs Marco Rubio, representing the Republican Party and the state of Florida, presented his draft sanctions against Russia in case of aggression against Ukraine. This is stated in the press service of the US Senate.

Rubio’s project is called the Deterrence of Authoritarian Warfare Act 2022.

In the event of Russian aggression against Ukraine, the senator proposed imposing sanctions against Russian President Vladimir Putin, Prime Minister Mikhail Mishustin and Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu. These persons will be banned from entering the United States and will freeze assets in American banks. In addition, Rubio noted that the sanctions will affect the richest Russian businessmen.

According to the senator’s draft, a ban is introduced on transactions with Russian energy, financial, mining, and aerospace companies. If the SWIFT international banking system does not stop providing services to Russian banks and organizations, sanctions will be imposed against it as well.

In addition, Rubio proposed imposing sanctions against the Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline.

Recall that recently a draft of a new package of sanctions by the US Senate against the public debt of Russia, the banking sector and some officials was made public.

In that project, President Vladimir Putin, Prime Minister Mikhail Mishustin, Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov, Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu, Chief of the General Staff of the Armed Forces of the Russian Federation Valery Gerasimov, as well as “commanders of various branches of the armed forces, including the air force and military – navy. It was also proposed to impose sanctions against at least three organizations from the list: Sberbank, VTB, Gazprombank, VEB, RDIF, MCB, Alfa-Bank, Russian Agricultural Bank, Otkritie, Promsvyazbank, Sovcombank, Transcapitalbank.

The Russian Foreign Ministry, in turn, said that they were ready for any development of events in the economic sphere.
