Australia has shown that its courts’ decision is “worthless”. This is how he commented on the situation with the tennis player Novak Djokovic arrested by the Australian authorities, who also had his visa canceled.

“We are often lectured on the rule of law <…>By doing this, you showed us what independent justice looks like and, above all, what meaningless justice looks like,” the Serbian leader said.

He added that the Australian judiciary means nothing, as the final decisions are made by the executive branch against the decisions of the judiciary.

“If you didn’t want to let Djokovic win the Melbourne tournament for the 10th time, why didn’t you immediately say so? Why are you mocking and torturing not only him, but also his family and the whole nation? Do you need it to win some elections, to please your public?” Vucic was outraged.

He also expressed bewilderment that the decision to cancel Djokovic’s visa was personally welcomed by Australian Prime Minister Scott Morrison.

“We will fight for Djokovic. You can write hundreds of disgusting articles about him, but he will remain the best tennis player of all time. Serbia will respond to you, respecting international rules and adequate behavior of the country,” Vučić emphasized.

Recall that Djokovic was detained on January 5 at Melbourne airport due to the fact that he could not provide Australian border guards with documents on medical exemption from vaccination against coronavirus. As it turns out, representatives of the Djokovic team requested a type of Australian visa, which is not issued to holders of a medical exemption from vaccination against COVID-19. On January 10, the Australian federal court in Melbourne upheld the appeal of the tennis player who challenged the annulment of his visa and the decision on deportation made by the country’s border service. However, Minister of Immigration, Citizenship and Cultural Diversity Alex Hawke later revoked Djokovic’s visa. Australian Prime Minister Scott Morrison supported the decision.

In Melbourne, Djokovic arrived to participate in the first Grand Slam tournament of the current Australian Open season. The Australian Open will take place from 17 to 30 January.
