The new reserve will establish a marine corridor between the Galápagos and Costa Rica’s Cocos Island, known as the “migravía.”
The actor Leonardo Dicaprio, a well-known environmentalist, today congratulated Ecuador’s initiative that created a new marine reserve in Galapagos, in order to protect this migratory corridor for endangered species in the tropical Pacific.
The appointment, in which the president of Ecuador, Guillermo Lasso, signed the decree, was attended by the Colombian president, Iván Duque, former US president Bill Clinton and high-level delegations from Costa Rica and Panama, took place aboard the Sierra Negra ship, moored in the bay of Puerto Ayora, on the island of Santa Cruz in the Ecuadorian archipelago.
“Congratulations to #Ecuador: Today, President @LassoGuillermo expanded marine protections around the #Galapagos Islands. The new area protects wildlife in the #CorredorMarino that connects the Galapagos Marine Reserve with the recently expanded marine reserves of Costa Rica,” Di Caprio wrote in his social media message.

“We may be a territory of small dimensions, our environmental footprint may be negligible compared to that of richer countries, but the planet is also ours and today, faced with the challenge of protecting it, we are getting bigger,” said the Ecuadorian president after the signing of the executive decree.
The event was attended by high-level delegations from Costa Rica and Panama, headed by their foreign ministers, who, together with Ecuador and Colombia, announced in November an agreement to establish the largest protected area in the Western Hemisphere.
The Galapagos Marine Reserve will be expanded by 60,000 square kilometers, which will be added to the existing protected areas of 138,000 square kilometers around the archipelago.
The new reserve will establish a marine corridor between the Galápagos and Costa Rica’s Cocos Island, known as the “migravía” for being a transit point for dozens of protected species. (I)
