The European Union has extended economic sanctions against Russia until the end of July this year. This is stated in a release on the website of the Council of the EU.
“The EU Council has decided to extend the restrictive measures that are currently in force in relation to certain sectors of the Russian economy for six months, until July 31, 2022,” the document says.
As stated in the release, the decision was made “after a recent assessment of the situation with the implementation of the Minsk agreements.”
Recall that restrictive measures were first introduced on July 31, 2014 for a year in response to “Russia’s actions that destabilize the situation in Ukraine.” Subsequently, the measures were strengthened.
In 2015, the European Council decided to link the duration of the economic sanctions to the full implementation of the Minsk agreements.
In addition to such sanctions, other EU restrictive measures are in place against Moscow as a reaction to the Ukrainian crisis: these are individual measures and measures in connection with the “annexation of Crimea and Sevastopol.”
