The GDR’s State Security Ministry, the Stasi, which ceased to exist in 1990, followed the current German chancellor, Olaf Scholz. The Stasi sent a number of information to the KGB, writes the German Bild with reference to the documents of this special service placed in the state archive.

According to RIA Novosti, by submitting a request, the journalists received documents from the Stasi archive. It can be concluded from the documents that Scholz came to the attention of the Stasi not only during visits to the GDR through the youth organization of the Social Democratic Party of Germany (SPD), but during his stay in West Germany.

So, for 9 years – from 1978 to 1987 – Stasi agents reported at least 19 times about Scholz and his activities in the youth organization of the SPD. In particular, Scholz was reported at least 12 times by the SPD member, the economist Kurt Wand from Hamburg (his father was a communist and spent time in a concentration camp, and later worked for the Stasi). According to the Stasi archive, the electronic database that mentions Scholz refers to the work of the Hamburg youth department, including internal conflicts and currents.

Some messages concerning Scholz were forwarded by the Stasi to Moscow, more precisely, to the KGB. For example, they sent a certificate prepared in 1982 by Vandom “Evaluation of the Federal Congress of Young Socialists”, where Scholz was mentioned. In Germany, these reports were not preserved, but could be preserved in Russia. At the same time, the very practice of transmitting such information to Moscow was not something unusual; in the USSR there was great interest in the political situation and the political alignment in the FRG.

Scholz himself commented on the news. According to him, he always knew that he was being followed. “It’s not great, but that’s the way it is,” he said.
