The Hungarians were presented before the tournament as a black horse who could compete for a medal at this year’s European handball championship. Moreover, the Hungarian media heated the atmosphere by suggesting that their staff could afford a great result. At the very beginning of the game, the Dutch built an advantage of three goals (2: 5), which after a few minutes they increased to five goals (4: 9). The Hungarians were trying to reduce the loss quite calmly, but for the break they came down with a difference of three hits (10:13).

At the beginning of the second half, it seemed that they would be able to make up for the losses from the first part of the match, when the Dutch reached one goal (14:15). Then their rivals responded with a series of three goals and returned to their safe lead (14:18). And it seemed for a long time that the Dutch would control the course of the match, keeping the three goals difference to the last minutes of the match (23:26).

Then, however, the Dutch seemed to run out of strength and let themselves catch up with the Hungarians within a few minutes. There was a draw 28:28 and everything indicated that the Hungarians would run away from the ax. However, a bizarre mistake made them waste their chance. The delegate of the meeting showed a substitution error, so the Hungarians had to finish the game weakened. The Dutch took advantage of their opportunity and won 31:28, making a great sensation on the first day of the European Championships.
