President of Kazakhstan Kassym-Jomart Tokayev met with Secretary General of the Collective Security Treaty Organization (CSTO) Stanislav Zas. According to Zas, tomorrow, January 13, a ten-day withdrawal of the peacekeeping contingent from the country will begin. This is stated in a message on the CSTO website.
Recall that on January 2, protests began in Kazakhstan due to an increase in prices for liquefied gas. The demonstrations subsequently escalated into clashes with police and riots. The CSTO, at the request of the President of Kazakhstan, announced the start of a peacekeeping mission in the country on January 6.
2030 CSTO peacekeepers and 250 units of military equipment were sent to Kazakhstan.
The day before, the President of Kazakhstan said that the withdrawal of the CSTO peacekeeping forces would begin in two days, their mission was ending. In turn, the commander of the Russian Airborne Forces and the contingent of peacekeepers in Kazakhstan, Colonel General Andrei Serdyukov, noted that the withdrawal of the CSTO peacekeepers would take place after the tasks were completed, in cooperation with the authorities of the republic.
The US authorities also welcomed the withdrawal of the CSTO peacekeeping contingent.
