PORTOVIEJO
Almost two months after the damage suffered by the airspace control radar located on the top of Montecristi hill, this surveillance device has not yet again emitted its signal to review illegal activities off the coast of Ecuador.
At dawn on Sunday, November 7, a large part of the inhabitants of the urban area of Montecristi heard a sound similar to an explosion, which originated in the hill of this city. Almost at noon that day, the Ecuadorian Air Force authorities acknowledged that there was a problem.
On Monday, November 8, Luis Hernández, Defense Minister, visited the top of the hill, where he verified the damage. After that verification, the beginning of at least three investigations was announced to find out what happened at dawn on Sunday, November 7.
The Ministry of Defense and the Armed Forces declared the information related to the investigations and reparations confidential.
Juan Francisco Núñez, governor of Manabí, said that the processes for the rehabilitation of the corresponding radar on the Montecristi hill continue and that it is still unknown when it will work again.
The representative of the Executive in Manabí stressed that emphasis has been placed on the contingency plans that they have ahead so that air surveillance controls are maintained in the country with other means.
“Due to sensitivity issues, obviously they do not disclose more information, but we are pending, and as soon as there are concrete advances, they will be able to inform the Manabi and Ecuadorian communities in a timely manner,” said Núñez.
Montecristi radar has a range of 220 miles; Another one is announced in Manabí
In Manabí, it is also considered to locate another radar in the parish of San Isidro, belonging to the Sucre canton, and that this would be located in the first months of this 2022.
Regarding that information, there is also no official pronouncement on when the work to locate said system for the control of illegal activities on the coasts of Ecuador would begin.
“I understand that this is progressing. In these first months of the year it was estimated from the beginning that it has to move forward, I understand that it is walking in the same direction ”, declared Núñez.
The radar became operational on October 27 and has a detection range of 220 miles, both in Manabí and in part of the Santa Elena province. (I)
