This species of frog joins four other species of amphibians that were recently also discovered in the Cordillera de Colán, Peru.
A new species of frog was discovered in the montane forests of the eastern slope of the Peruvian Andes, as announced on Wednesday by the National Service of Natural Areas Protected by the State (Sernanp) of Peru in a statement.
The frog, baptized with the scientific name of Pristimantis paulpittmani sp. nov., was found in Cerro El Adobe, a conservation concession located near the Cordillera de Colán National Sanctuary, which is located in the province of Bagua, in the Amazon region.
The finding was made by herpetologists from the Peruvian Institute of Herpetology, the Rainforest Partnership organization and the Center for Ornithology and Biodiversity (Corbidi).
Pablo Venegas, principal investigator, stated that this small species stands out for having yellow or cream colored groins and a whitish cream colored iris with scattered dark brown reticulations and a fine dark brown vertical stripe in the middle of the eye.

In addition, it has a tuberculate dorsal surface and a snout with a conical tubercle at the tip, while it lacks a ring and tympanic membrane.
New species in the Cordillera de Colán
This species of frog joins four other species of amphibians that were recently also discovered in the Cordillera de Colán, covering nearly 40,000 hectares to protect a sample of montane or cloud forests, where the clouds are trapped between the vegetation.
The research that achieved this discovery is part of the two expeditions that were carried out within the framework of the project “Undiscovered Treasures: Herpetofauna of the Cordillera de Colán National Sanctuary – Sernanp”, financed by the Critical Ecosystem Partnership Fund and the Environmental Fund of Peru (Profonanpe ).

In this regard, Christian Olivera, head of the Cordillera de Colán National Sanctuary, highlighted that biological research is a priority for the management process of the protected natural area, and that the report of new species for science positions the sanctuary as an ideal place for the development of scientific activity.
Peru is one of the ten countries with the greatest biodiversity in the world, for having a multitude of ecosystems that are home to hundreds of endemic species and a large part of the animals, plants and flowers that can be found on the planet, a wealth threatened by climate change and human activities.
