The head of the HRC urged to allow Memorial to continue to preserve the memory of the repressions

Valery Fadeev, head of the Human Rights Council under the President of the Russian Federation, believes that it is worth allowing the International Historical and Educational Society “Memorial” (recognized in the Russian Federation as an NCO-foreign agent) continue to work to preserve the memory of the victims of political repression. At the same time, he noted that the organization needs to eliminate the identified violations.

Fadeev described the situation with Memorial as difficult. Lawyer Henry Reznik considers the appeal of the prosecutor’s office to the Supreme Court as an unfair statement of an unfounded claim. However, opponents point out that Memorial went beyond the originally stated goals and ignored Russian legislation.

According to the head of the HRC, it would be useful to give Memorial an opportunity to correct those aspects that caused the claims, and to continue to work on restoring the historical truth and preserving the memory of the victims of political repression.

As a reminder, on December 28, the Supreme Court of the Russian Federation liquidated International Memorial at the suit of the General Prosecutor’s Office of the Russian Federation. The supervisory authority insisted that the organization carried out activities in violation of the Constitution and the requirements of the legislation on foreign agents. A representative of the Prosecutor General’s Office said during the debate to the court that Memorial “speculates on the theme of repression of the 20th century and creates a false image of the USSR.” The defense intends to appeal the decision.

Memorial was added to the list of non-profit organizations performing the functions of a foreign agent in 2016.
