Santo Domingo COE declares cantonal alert to significant increase in COVID-19 cases

The city reports 100% occupancy of beds in ICU and 86% in hospitalization areas. There are ten deaths per week from the coronavirus.

The Santo Domingo Emergency Operations Committee (COE) declared the cantonal alert to the increase in confirmed cases of COVID-19.

The Ministry of Public Health (MSP) reported that the city reports 100% occupancy of beds in Intensive Care Units (ICU) and 86% in hospitalization areas. Likewise, the deceased patients with coronavirus are an average of ten per week.

Epidemiologist Katherine Aguirre indicated that there is a significant increase in those infected with COVID-19. Since the start of the pandemic, Santo Domingo has reported 13,027 confirmed cases.

Between November and this week, 635 cases have been registered, 298 corresponding to the last two epidemiological weeks, Aguirre reported.

After the exposure of numbers of infections and deaths, the local authorities met in the afternoon and night of this Monday 27 to take various measures.

An exhaustive and rigorous control was ordered to the commercial establishments so that they comply with a maximum capacity of 50%.

The local COE urged the health board to grant the endorsement for massive COVID-19 tests to be carried out to the respective entities.

Acts and events must receive authorization from the cantonal COE from December 27. It was indicated that the Biosafety Committee will provide advice on these decisions.

The Fire Department is urged to carry out a general fumigation and washing plan in the busiest areas in the city and where there are more cases of contagion. (I)
