Ramón Ramos Lima, Flamengo’s left-back, accused of manslaughter for running over a cyclist in Rio de Janeiro

The accusation was made by the Rio Civil Police after investigating the event.

Brazilian soccer player Ramón Ramos Lima, who plays for Flamengo and who earlier this month ran his car over a cyclist who died from the impact, was formally charged with manslaughter, police authorities reported Tuesday.

The accusation was made by the Civil Police of Rio de Janeiro, which after investigating the event concluded that, although there was a “recklessness” of the cyclist, the same happened with Ramón, who was driving his vehicle at a speed greater than the permitted speed.

The accident occurred on December 4 on an avenue in Rio de Janeiro, when a man identified as Davi dos Santos, who worked as a deliveryman by application, crossed his bicycle in the path of Ramón’s car and was run over.

The Flamengo player himself, who is only 20 years old, provided help and called the emergency services after the impact with the delivery man, who died when he was transferred to a hospital.

Ramón later went to a police station to present his version of events, verified by the authorities, which in the accusation itself have recognized that the cyclist recklessly crossed the path of the car.

However, they have also verified, through cameras installed on the avenue where the event occurred, that Ramón was circulating at a speed “between 20 and 70% higher” than the permitted speed, which at that site is 70 kilometers per hour.

Ramón, a base player for Flamengo, the most popular team in Brazil, made his debut with the first team in 2018. Already established in the squad, this season he has played 24 games with the Rio de Janeiro team. (D)
