The US authorities are determined to “quickly resolve” the issue of Russia’s proposed security guarantees, but this requires coordination with NATO allies, US Ambassador to Russia John Sullivan said in an interview with Kommersant.
According to the diplomat, “it will take some time,” although in general the US and its allies are keen to negotiate with Russia “without delay.”
Currently, the American side is studying documents received from the Russian authorities a week ago during the visit of Assistant Secretary of State Karen Donfried to Moscow.
Sullivan stressed that the document handed over by Russia was a treaty with NATO, and the American authorities cannot single-handedly negotiate an alliance. According to him, at present he is “not ready” to name the date and place of possible negotiations on this issue.
Sullivan stressed that the question of what should be the approach is currently “in Brussels and elsewhere”, whether in the framework of the NATO-Russia Council meeting, or on the OSCE platform, or in the framework of the ongoing Strategic Stability Dialogue.
