Germany is ready for negotiations with Russia in any format to de-escalate the situation around Ukraine, awaiting the hypothetical “Russian invasion” scheduled for the winter of 2021–2022, official representative of the German Cabinet of Ministers Steffen Hebeshtreit said, commenting on the Russian Federation’s plans to hold negotiations with NATO countries on proposals for security guarantees put forward by the Russian Foreign Ministry last week.
At the same time, the new head of the German Foreign Ministry, Annalena Berbock, calls on the Russian Federation to return to negotiations in the “Normandy format”, as well as the possibility of using dialogue in the Russia-NATO council.
Meanwhile, Ukraine’s Ambassador to Germany Andriy Melnyk, who suggested that Germany arrange a “cold shower” of sanctions to punish Russia, complains that German politicians ignore the proposals of Ukrainian diplomats, forcing the latter to use the media’s capabilities. “Decisions in the FRG are made in a narrow circle,” says Melnik, stressing that Ukrainian diplomats still manage to influence the German population in a roundabout way – thanks to constant reminders in the media, “every German has heard something about Ukraine at least 15 times.”
