Ukrainian miners remain underground for the fourth day, demanding to pay off wage arrears

The miners of the Kapitalnaya mine, which is part of the Ukrainian state-owned enterprise Mirnogradugol, continue the underground protest action announced on December 17. They refuse to come to the surface, demanding the payment of wage arrears.

The chairman of the Independent Trade Union of Miners of Ukraine (NPGU) Mikhail Volynets announced this on his Facebook page, explaining that by the end of December 2021, the miners had not received their salaries for September. In addition to Kapitalnaya, protests are taking place at three more mines in Ukraine, while the miners of the Gornaya mine are preparing to declare a hunger strike.

The Ukrainian Energy Ministry is going to donate over 700 million hryvnias (over $ 25 million) this week to pay salaries to employees of state-owned coal mining enterprises. But this is only part of Kiev’s impressive debt to the miners – as the Ukrainian newspaper Den recalls, by the beginning of December the debt to the workers of the state mines of Ukraine exceeded 2 billion hryvnias.
