Ecuadorian authorities start pilot plan to register the prison population due to prison crisis

Ecuador has been the scene of the death of some 300 people as a result of clashes in the country’s prisons in 2021.

The Ecuadorian authorities began this Monday a pilot plan preparatory to a census broader and that, for the first time, will gather sociodemographic and legal information on the prison population, in the midst of the serious prison crisis that this year leaves at least 300 inmates murdered.

The National Comprehensive Care Service to Adult Deprived of Liberty and Adolescent Offenders of Ecuador (SNAI) explained that the plan, lasting two days, aims to carry out a census of the prison population to obtain information of various kinds such as sociodemographic, legal data, family situation and treatment axes.

The census will allow the implementation of actions to achieve the objectives of the Ecuador Rescue Plan regarding the care of the prison situation.

The prison authority indicated in a statement.

This will take place in one of the Deprivation of Liberty Centers of the country this Monday and Tuesday and its execution is put into practice by the technical table formed by the SNAI, the National Institute of Statistics and Censuses (INEC), the General Directorate of Civil Registry, Identification and Certification, the National Directorate of Police Scientific Technical Investigation and the Secretariat of Human Rights.

It is a initial test that will allow to refine details of what will be the 2022 Penitentiary Census, in the 36 detention centers in the country, adds the SNAI.

In parallel, the authorities also will review application details of the security protocol, biosafety measures, logistics, registration times in forms and exchange and consolidation of information.
