The second tunneling shield was launched in St. Petersburg towards the future Karetnaya metro station

In St. Petersburg, during the construction of the Krasnoselsko-Kalininskaya metro line, a second tunneling shield was launched from the Putilovskaya station under construction towards the future Karetnaya station. Metro construction workers began excavation in test mode. The work of the KT-1 shield was started by Governor Alexander Beglov.

“We started working on digging two new tunnels on the Krasnoselsko-Kalininskaya line in 2023. The first shield went out in December. The second shield will go parallel. This technology will significantly speed up penetration. In September we plan to launch another shield, which is manufactured by the Almaz-Antey concern,” the governor noted.

Once put into operation, the shield will pass through four stations – Bronevaya, Zastavskaya, Borovaya and Karetnaya. The length of this section is about 7 kilometers. In total, for the construction of the line from Putilovskaya to Karetnaya, it is planned to use four shields with a diameter of 5.6 meters, the last of which is expected to be launched on a “counter course” at the beginning of 2025.

KT-1, which began work today, like the shield that is already sinking a new line, was created in 1989 in the Donbass by specialists from the Yasinovatsky Machine-Building Plant. St. Petersburg engineers and metro workers modernized it and prepared it for work. “Our craftsmen and engineers were able to do everything necessary to restore both these two shields and the Nadezhda shield. After the creation of the new company “Metrostroy of the Northern Capital”, we are increasing the volume of metro construction. But you need equipment. Funds have been allocated. The most important thing is that the critical point has been passed, the metro builders are working,” the governor noted.

According to the general director of JSC Metrostroy of the Northern Capital, Dmitry Vasiliev, “the main task is to build this section before 2030.” It will allow connecting several metro lines, which will enable St. Petersburg residents to get to their destination faster and more comfortably – without the need to go to the center for a transfer.

As Vasiliev explained, the further launch of tunneling shields will open up a wide range of work for metro builders, including the construction of station complexes and tunnel structures.

Alexander Beglov emphasized that Russian President Vladimir Putin has set the task of ensuring the uninterrupted construction of metro facilities in St. Petersburg. Currently, in accordance with this instruction, the Northern Capital Metrostroy company plans to build 20 new stations and reconstruct 12 existing ones. Also, the governor noted, the expansion of the Northern capital’s metro is enshrined in the adopted new General Plan of the city. The problems are being solved in a comprehensive manner – in particular, the issue of purchasing land for the future depot is now on the agenda of the city authorities

The governor also recalled that in June 2023, to extend the Nevsko-Vasileostrovskaya metro line towards the future Bogatyrskaya and Kamenka stations, the Nadezhda shield was launched in test mode. Today, metro builders are actively working at the Teatralnaya and Gorny Institute stations of the Lakhtinsko-Pravoberezhnaya line, at the Putilovskaya and Yugo-Zapadnaya stations of the Krasnoselsko-Kalininskaya line, and the reconstruction of the Chernyshevskaya station is also being completed.
