The Kremlin commented on the results of the presidential elections in Finland. Russia respects the choice of the Finns, said Russian Presidential Press Secretary Dmitry Peskov, as quoted by RIA Novosti.
Moscow hopes that the new president will have a more balanced approach to bilateral relations, the Kremlin spokesman added.
“We can only respect the Finns’ choice. Every time we express the hope that the new head of state will be a supporter of the development of bilateral relations with Russia,” Peskov said.
He added that previously Russia and Finland had very developed partnerships, and this period was better than the one that arose “at the initiative of the Finnish authorities.” “We remain hopeful that the new head of Finland will have a more balanced approach to the topic of Russian-Finnish relations,” Peskov added.
According to him, Vladimir Putin will not congratulate the new President of Finland on his election. “At the moment, Finland is one of our unfriendly countries. She fully acceded to the sanctions. The statements of Mr. New President themselves are of a very, very unfriendly nature,” the press secretary added.
Let us recall that following the results of the second round in Finland, Alexander Stubb, an opponent of dialogue with Moscow, won the presidential election.
