Belarusian blogger Palchis sentenced to 13 years in a maximum security colony

The Minsk city court sentenced blogger Eduard Palchis to 13 years in a maximum security colony. He was accused of inciting social hostility and discord, which entailed grave consequences, organizing mass riots, organizing a gross violation of order and calling for action against the national security of Belarus.

The court also decided to recognize the prosecutor’s right to satisfy civil claims in the interests of Gorremavtodor of the Minsk City Executive Committee, Minsktourist, Spetskommunavtotrans, Minskzelenstroy, Minsktrans for compensation for property damage.

According to the court and the investigation, Palchis “began criminal activity” back in 2016, right up to his arrest. “The main weapon of Palchis was the Internet resources created and managed by him, including the Telegram channel and pages on social networks, which captured most of the country’s audience, their trust and were used to control the minds of the crowd, instill“ necessary ”information, incline to the planned criminal acts, ”the Minsk Office of the Investigative Committee of the Republic of Belarus reported earlier.

Minsk investigators believe that the information published on these resources incited hatred towards law enforcement officers, officials, as well as members of the public who actively advocate the observance of law and order and the preservation of the current state system in Belarus, Belta reports.

“Simultaneously with the ‘clouding’ of the consciousness of citizens, Palchis was organizing riots and group actions that grossly violate public order,” the indictment also says.

The Palchis trial was held behind closed doors. The verdict can still be appealed to the Supreme Court of Belarus.
