The Ministry of Internal Affairs will check all criminals who have received Russian citizenship

The Russian Ministry of Internal Affairs will check all naturalized citizens of the Russian Federation who have committed crimes, the Kommersant newspaper reports, citing the ministry’s press service. According to the department, from October 26 last year to January 10 this year, a decision was made against 62 people to deprive them of citizenship on the basis of committing a crime.

The Ministry of Internal Affairs stated that there are certain categories of crimes for which a procedure for terminating citizenship is provided. Representatives of the ministry referred to the law of April 2023. The statute of limitations for such crimes does not affect the process of deprivation of a Russian passport. Among the atrocities for which one can lose citizenship are rape, drug trafficking, and violence against government officials.

The Main Directorate (GU) of the Ministry of Internal Affairs reported that most often such decisions are made in Moscow, St. Petersburg, as well as in the Moscow and Leningrad regions. In addition, we are talking about the Vladimir, Chelyabinsk, Tver, Orenburg and Nizhny Novgorod regions.

The press service of the Ministry of Internal Affairs also announced the immediate expulsion of persons who have served their sentences and were deprived of Russian citizenship. Citizens who commit crimes will be deprived of their passports and then sent to serve their sentences. After their release, they will be “removed” from the territory of the Russian Federation, the department emphasized.

Let us recall that in October 2023, citizenship legislation came into force in Russia. According to the new provisions of the law, a citizen can now be deprived of a passport for certain crimes, including if security forces consider his activities to threaten state security.
