The new Polish government intends to legalize abortion

Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk announced the government’s intention to legalize abortion in the country for the first time since 1993, Kommersant reports, citing the Polish publication PAP. It is assumed that abortion can be performed before the 12th week of pregnancy.

Tusk stressed that the ruling Civic Coalition had held a discussion on this issue within the government. According to the prime minister, among the coalition members there are different points of view on this issue, but disagreements were resolved by discussing proposals with organizations protecting women’s rights. The Sejm (Polish parliament) intends to achieve the legalization of abortion, taking into account existing opinions on this issue.

In addition, Tusk announced amendments that simplified the purchase of emergency contraception for girls from 15 years of age. At the same time, customers will no longer be required to provide prescriptions, the Prime Minister emphasized. According to the head of government, this decision will allow people who have not yet had access to medications for emergency abortion to freely receive them if necessary.

Tusk said the government’s new proposals and amendments are in line with European Union standards and recommendations.

Under existing laws in Poland, pregnancy can be terminated only after rape or on the testimony of doctors. The previous ultra-conservative government led by Mateusz Morawiecki opposed abortion. Before the elections, Tusk stated his disagreement with this policy.
