Poland will conduct joint exercises with military personnel from NATO countries, the country’s Ministry of Defense reported. The Dragon-24 (DR-24) maneuvers will take place as part of the joint exercise Steadfast Defender 2024.
Along with NATO troops, Ukrainian Armed Forces soldiers will also take part in Steadfast Defender. The training will be aimed at improving the effectiveness of combat and defense on land, sea and air, the press service of the Polish Ministry of Defense emphasizes. As part of the exercises, it is planned to practice the behavior of soldiers in crisis situations, as well as improve defense skills in the context of operational actions.
On January 22, Lithuanian President Gitanas Nauseda said that Lithuania plans to work out a military strategy in the Suwalki corridor together with Poland. It is this section between Belarus and the Kaliningrad region that could become a zone for direct contact between Russian and NATO troops, German journalists argued. Both countries intend to practice joint behavior of troops in a crisis situation.
NATO Exercise Steadfast Defender 2024 takes place from 22 to 28 January. Military training is planned in Germany, the Baltic countries and Poland. It is expected that the events will help the Ukrainian military to gain experience.
Earlier, the Russian Foreign Ministry called such exercises a return to the times of the Cold War. Moscow considers NATO’s actions a provocation that creates the risk of “military incidents.” The Kremlin reserves the right to symmetrical actions in response to increased militarism in the West.
