Milei government obtains ruling on the ‘omnibus law’: what does it consist of?

The so-called ‘omnibus law’, star project of the Executive of Javier Mileiwill begin its process tomorrow in the Chamber of Deputies of Argentinaafter the ruling party achieved the majority opinion in the plenary session of commissions in the early hours of this Wednesday, thanks to the support of several opposition forces.

After six debate sessions in the plenary session of committees during the last two weeks, La Libertad Avanza – the far-right force led by Milei that has only 38 deputies of the 257 in the Lower House – achieved the majority ruling with 55 signatures, although 34 of them were in partial dissent (that is, in disagreement with some articles).

This was achieved thanks to the support of numerous members of the Together for Change coalition (center-right), whose candidates for Presidency and Vice Presidency in the October elections, Patricia Bullrich and Luis Petri, today make up Milei’s cabinet, and a part of Peronism. dissident.

Meanwhile, there were expressions against the official text and the Union for the Homeland (Peronism) and the Left Front, in addition to other progressive formations, ruled in the minority.

The project promoted by the Executive – which involves a broad reform of the State with deregulations, modifications and repeals of laws in various areas to limit state intervention – will begin to be discussed tomorrow on the premises.

Although La Libertad Avanza only has 38 deputies out of a total of 257, it achieved the favorable ruling thanks to the collaboration of opposition blocks more open to dialogue with the ruling party.

However, they also maintained differences between them, which are explained in the partial dissent of the text. Export rights or the updating of pensions are two of the aspects that generate the most differences in the project among those who support the bill. Both measures are key to achieving the fiscal balance that Milei set out to achieve this year.

The Argentine Executive called extraordinary sessions in Congress to debate its initiative, generating unusual activity for January in the chambers of Deputies and Senators.

Despite the initial intransigence and the need to approve the new rule in record time, the Milei Government agreed to negotiate the content of the bill with the opponents and extended the extraordinary sessions until February 15.

The bill on Bases and Starting Points for the Freedom of Argentines followed a megadecree of necessity and urgency (DNU), which came into force on December 29.

Both regulations face judicial decisions – which have already suspended part of the deregulations included in the DNU – and opposition in the streets, since this Wednesday the Milei Government will face its first general strike, called by the General Confederation of Labor (CGT). , the main union center in the country and identified with Peronism.
