Specialists from more than two dozen research centers around the world analyzed data regarding the state of the brain of women suffering from anorexia and those who do not have this disorder, writes Pravda.Ru.
The results of a comparative analysis revealed a significant decrease in brain size in patients with this disease. However, the information about the recovery of brain parameters in those who undergo recovery is encouraging.
The neuroscience study pooled data from different countries, including 685 brain scans of women with anorexia and 963 scans of those with normal weight. Anorexia has been found to lead to significant changes in brain structure, including thinning of the cortex, shrinkage of subcortical regions, and reduction in cortical surface area due to loss of neurons and connections between them, which can affect cognitive function and intelligence.
These changes turned out to be several times more pronounced than in other mental disorders. However, in patients on the recovery path, brain structure improved significantly, confirming that these changes are not permanent.
