A recent study found that drinking beer may have a positive effect on memory. However, there is one big “but” – this only works if you drink no more than the permitted limit.
Scientists have found that drinking a pint of beer (570 ml) daily can have a positive effect on the brain. Those who regularly drank beer had better memory than those who did not drink alcohol, writes ridus.ru.
During the study, which involved 1,652 people, they were asked about the amount of alcohol they drank. They then took tests to measure thinking speed and short-term memory.
Scientist Selena Cansino reports: “Beer drinkers showed more accurate and faster responses in verbal and spatial working memory compared to non-drinkers or wine drinkers.”
Cansino admits she expected wine drinkers to perform best.
A study from the University of Mexico found that drinking alcohol in moderation is also important, as too much or too little alcohol can negatively impact brain performance.
In his article in the journal Current Psychology, Professor Cansino writes: “The optimal amount of alcohol to improve working memory for men and women is 100 g per week, which equates to one drink per day.”
This figure corresponds to one pint (just over half a liter) of beer with an alcohol content of 3.6% per day.
