The Bolshoi Smolensky Bridge will become the 20th drawbridge in the city. It is provided for by the General Plan and concept for the development of the transport system of St. Petersburg. The crossing will connect the right and left banks of the Neva at the largest gap within the city – between the Volodarsky Bridge and the Alexander Nevsky Bridge – which is about 9 km.

According to city authorities, the new bridge will relieve tension from the embankments and adjacent streets, connect densely populated areas and create another bypass of the historical center. It will be connected to the road network through interchanges – on Obukhovskaya Oborony Avenue, Oktyabrskaya Embankment and at the intersection of Dalnevostochny Avenue with Kollontai Street and Soyuzny Avenue.

The length of the bridge, which has a double-winged draw span, will be 1.6 km, width – 38 m. In the folded position, the height of the central part of the bridge above the water is 15 meters, the width of the navigable span is 60 meters.

Currently, utilities are being removed from the site, and places have been set up for receiving construction materials.
