The federal budget of the Russian Federation allocates over a trillion rubles annually for the integration and development of new regions. The President of Russia announced this at a direct line and a large press conference “Results of the year with Vladimir Putin.” In addition, sister city ties have already been established with the cities of the new territories.
St. Petersburg is also actively working in this direction. As the press service of Smolny told RosBalt, a number of socially important facilities will be commissioned in St. Petersburg’s sister city Mariupol next year, including the Neptune swimming pool and two health complexes, and work on the restoration of the drama theater has also been completed. This year, adult and children’s clinics and an oncology building were opened. At the end of October, construction work was completed in the pediatric surgery department, and the design of the pediatric infectious diseases department began. By the end of 2024, it is planned to commission the building for auxiliary services of the hospital campus and the diagnostic building.
“On instructions from the President of Russia, from the first days after the liberation, St. Petersburg began to restore Mariupol. A year and a half ago, our cities signed a twinning agreement. During this time, the people of Mariupol have become family to us,” said the governor of the Northern capital, Alexander Beglov.
St. Petersburg specialists have already restored and built dozens of facilities in Mariupol. During 2022–2023, 4 kindergartens and 3 schools were put into operation, a monument to Alexander Nevsky was erected, three multifunctional centers were opened, and the Palace of Children and Youth Creativity was restored. In addition, repair and restoration work has been completed in the City Garden culture and recreation park and the 50th Anniversary of Victory Park, and fountains are being actively restored and launched in different areas of the city. Tram traffic has been restored – work is currently underway to repair the tram depot.
St. Petersburg also donated more than 100 buses to Mariupol, and now St. Petersburg specialists regularly travel to the sister city to maintain the transferred vehicles. At the same time, the issue of organizing a permanent repair zone on the basis of the Mariupoltrans enterprise is being considered.
During the holidays, schoolchildren from Mariupol come to relax at the Molodezhny children’s center. In 2023, graduates of Mariupol schools received certificates in St. Petersburg during the Scarlet Sails holiday. And for the New Year holidays, 120 young residents of the twin city will again come to St. Petersburg.
