A pandemic of omicron, a strain of coronavirus in Russia, is “almost inevitable.” This was predicted by the molecular biologist, professor at the Skolkovo Institute of Science and Technology Georgy Bazykin, reports Lenta.Ru.
According to him, this is possible due to the fact that those who have had the “delta” can become infected with a new mutation. “I think an omicron pandemic is almost inevitable. Those 16 people, about whom we are talking now, are people who returned from South Africa, and it is not known whether they transmitted this virus to anyone further, ”the specialist said.
Bazykin noted that the main question now is “when exactly will we begin to observe this virus in the population, that is, transmitted from one person to another person within Russia.” After that, as the Skolkovo biologist explained, the omicron is likely to grow against the background of the delta in the same way as in other countries.
Earlier, Bazykin suggested that the coronavirus could become a second flu, but that still needs to be lived. According to him, the mortality rate for coronavirus infection is 100 times higher than for influenza, but this figure may change. The biologist also stated that the “delta” variant of the covid widespread in the Russian Federation is unlikely to be able to hold back the advancement of the “omicron”.
