In Guano, damage is evaluated and material washed away by alluvium is removed

The natural phenomenon affected at least 35 homes, the sanitary and storm sewer system, even blocking roads.

Representatives of several public entities carried out a tour to identify the effects caused by the alluvium registered in Guano, Chimborazo province, last weekend.

The natural phenomenon caused damage to houses, shops and handicrafts, sanitary and storm sewer system, even blocking roads and drinking water network.

Likewise, residents of Guano came out with picks, shovels and other materials to clean the streets, homes, shops and other places that were affected by the alluvium that occurred last Saturday and dragged tons of mud, stones and logs.

In addition, the Chimborazo Government, the Risk Management Service and other emergency institutions activated the unified command post (PMU) in order to coordinate response actions to the adverse event.

Initially, teams from the Municipality, the Provincial Government of Chimborazo and the Ministry of Transportation and Public Works worked on cleaning the affected roads.

The flood affected 30 homes and left five bridges disabled, said Mayor Raúl Cabrera. The mayor of the town indicated that the sewage system in the area near the creek is also collapsed. “We are concerned because we do not have the necessary resources,” said the mayor.

The damage was mainly concentrated in sectors of the La Merced neighborhood, La Dolorosa del Cementerio, Magdalena, Santa Anita, Central, San Pedro, La Inmaculada, María de Los Ángeles, Espíritu Santo, La Dolorosa Centro, Santa Teresita (Los Elenes spa) , located in the Matriz parish, of the Guano canton, reported the Risk Management Service.

In the room of the La Inmaculada neighborhood, the Risk Management Service and the Municipality of the canton activated temporary accommodation for the affected families.

María Pontón, governor of Chimborazo, reported that she has been in Guano working since last Saturday when all the national government portfolios were activated.

He commented that together with the Fire Brigade and the National Police they went house to house in some areas to help evacuate people from their homes, who were offered to attend the shelter, but some preferred to go to relatives’ houses.

He said that through the Ministry of Economic and Social Inclusion (MIES) the information of evacuees, the elderly and children is collected in order to deliver food kits, clothing and mattresses if necessary. Likewise, Health personnel collaborate in caring for the population that suffered an emotional impact as a result of the damages and losses.

The governor explained that to enable the roads affected by the alluvium, a work was articulated with the machinery of the provincial government of Chimborazo, municipality of Guano and the Ministry of Transportation and Public Works (MTOP).

She has also been visiting several communities where she has evidenced damage to the roads, so from this Tuesday, the 14th, technicians will be sent to begin work on enabling connectivity.

They evaluate affectations

The Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock is collecting information on the losses that exist in the livestock issue and that it is going to dialogue with the affected families to coordinate the delivery in the shortest possible time of 1% credits for a 30-year term, he added.

He said that for the afternoon of this Monday as president of the Provincial Emergency Operations Committee (COE), he called a meeting to discuss various issues such as the evaluation of the information collected by each ministry, in order to adopt the actions that allow solving the effects of the alluvium. “Right now I can’t give a real statistic,” he added.

The Municipality revealed that more than 35 homes in the cantonal capital and 6 in the San Isidro community suffered damage. Los Elenes water park was also affected.

Party suspension

Different personalities from various sectors of Chimborazo have come together to make collections and help those who were affected by the flood.

The National University of Chimborazo (Unach), in Riobamba, and the Marcos Montalvo Coliseum, in Guano, were set up as collection centers for non-perishable food, bottles of water, rice, sugar, oil, blankets and blankets. (I)
