In St. Petersburg, the consequences of a heavy snowfall are being eliminated around the clock

St. Petersburg continues to eliminate the consequences of snowfall. All specialized services of the Northern capital stood up to combat the rampant disaster, and interdepartmental cooperation was established to eliminate the consequences of the snowfall.

At an emergency meeting of the city government to eliminate the consequences of the cyclone and the city improvement headquarters, Governor Alexander Beglov ordered to clear the city streets of snow as soon as possible so that St. Petersburg residents could quickly return to their normal way of life.

“The entire engineering infrastructure in the city must work. This needs to be taken under special control. Citizens must be provided with water, electricity, gas, and heat,” Beglov said.

A high-alert regime at enterprises of the road and engineering-energy complexes was introduced the day before due to worsening weather conditions. Emergency crews switched to round-the-clock duty to promptly eliminate the consequences of possible violations of engineering infrastructure. Road workers carried out preventive anti-icing treatment of streets and sidewalks, and areas of the city were also treated with special mixtures by local services.

According to the Chairman of the Committee on Energy and Engineering Support Stanislav Protasov, the measures taken made it possible to eliminate all technological violations in a timely manner. Currently, the State Unitary Enterprise “Vodokanal” continues restoration work at house 4 on Nauki Avenue, where a leak in the cold water main with a diameter of 500 mm was discovered. A repair team with specialized equipment has already localized the leak.

15 cm of precipitation fell overnight in St. Petersburg. The main efforts were aimed at cleaning the road network, sidewalks, approaches to metro stations, and transport stops. Snow collection and snow melting points operate 24/7. Over the past 24 hours, they have already received about 14 thousand cubic meters of snow collected from city streets and highways. 300 garbage trucks and 324 units of special equipment hit the streets, with another 12 in reserve. Additional equipment was allocated by the construction and energy committees – this practice of interdepartmental interaction became permanent during heavy snowfalls.

According to the head of the Improvement Committee Vasily Ponidelko, the situation is under control, and snow removal from the streets will continue throughout the day. Along with intensive cleaning of sidewalks and highways, roofs are cleared of snow and ice; in addition to regular roofers, industrial climbers are involved in the work.

As Alexander Beglov explained, there are still some difficulties with cleaning internal areas – it is difficult to immediately cope with the consequences of heavy snowfall. “But first of all, the life support of the city: transport, engineering infrastructure, highways, roads, kindergartens, schools, hospitals,” the governor emphasized. And we managed to cope with this – the delivery of food and other goods to schools, kindergartens and medical institutions occurs without failures.

As Beglov explained, the well-established operational interaction of the city government with district administrations, management companies, housing agencies and cleaning contractors on the street and road network helps to a great extent in the comprehensive fight against the consequences of the cyclone that hit the city.
