Lucía Bustos’ relatives ask for justice seven months after her death in the north of Ambato; They accuse cohabitant of femicide

Almost seven months after the death of Lucía Bustos Sarmiento, her family and friends hope that justice will be served with a conviction against the person responsible for the alleged femicide: her partner. This event occurred on May 20 in the Quillán Loma Alto sector, Izamba parish, in the north of Ambato.

Paola Vela Bustos, niece of the victim, said that Next Monday the trial hearing is scheduled to be held, in the judicial unit located in the market sector America. He hopes that this diligence, as he commented, is not postponed and that in the end justice be done against the person who allegedly took the life of his relative.

Vela recalled that the alleged perpetrator of the femicide would have wanted to suggest that his aunt committed suicide as a result of the cancer she suffered. However, the autopsy showed that she had not taken pills, as he had said. His aunt died, according to the forensic document, from lacerations to the liver and abdominal trauma caused with a blunt object.

She regretted that her aunt was not killed by her cancer, but by the person she lived with, who when she visited them made them think she was a good person. He assured that they never imagined that his aunt lived a hell.

The victim had a relationship of fifteen years with the alleged aggressor, who treated her with violence and that she had even issued a restraining order, according to Marco Salazar, head of the National Directorate of Crimes Against Life, Violent Deaths, Disappearances, Extortion and Kidnapping (Dinased) of Tungurahua, last May.

Magaly Aguilar, one of the lawyers for the victim’s family who works against gender violence, reiterated that next Monday, at 08:30, the trial hearing is scheduled to take place, where they will be evacuated the evidence that was collected during the tax investigation.

Aguilar argued that the victim had suffered multiple assaults on the part of the cohabitant MGL, for which he is required to receive a sentence according to the facts that are proven. The alleged perpetrator is expected to receive the maximum penalty for the crime of femicide, with 34 years in prison for aggravating circumstances, as established in article 140 of the Comprehensive Organic Penal Code (COIP).
