Russia has prepared a resolution on the Gaza Strip and requested an urgent vote in the UN Security Council

UN Security Council meeting

Russia prepared a resolution on the situation in the Gaza Strip and distributed the document among members of the UN Security Council. This was announced by First Deputy Permanent Representative of the Russian Federation Dmitry Polyansky.

According to him, Moscow requested a vote on the resolution at 22:00 Moscow time on Monday, October 16.

“We expect that Brazil, which chairs the Council, will soon confirm the voting,” Polyansky noted on the social network, as quoted by Kommersant.

As the newspaper clarifies, the draft resolution proposes to call for an “immediate humanitarian ceasefire” in Gaza, as well as to “strongly condemn any violence and hostilities against the civilian population, and all acts of terrorism.” The resolution, however, never mentions Hamas, which Israel is fighting with, Reuters clarifies.

Earlier it was reported that Israel announced preparations for a ground operation in the Gaza Strip, which the army planned to begin on the night of October 15. According to Axios, Iranian authorities have threatened to “respond” if Israel launches such an operation. On the morning of October 15, Tel Aviv announced that it had temporarily postponed the start of the operation, citing bad weather conditions.

Let us recall that the escalation of the conflict between Israel and the Palestinian Hamas movement began on October 7, when the movement’s militants fired at Israeli territory. In response, Israel organized a blockade of the Gaza Strip, local residents found themselves in a “trap” – they were asked to evacuate, but they had nowhere to go. Currently, there is a difficult humanitarian situation in the enclave – there is no water or electricity in the houses.
