NATO will respond decisively if it turns out that the Balticconnector gas pipeline between Finland and Estonia was damaged by a deliberate attack. This was stated by NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg before a meeting with the defense ministers of the countries of the military-political bloc.
“If an intentional action is confirmed, NATO’s response will be united and decisive,” Stoltenberg said, as quoted by RIA Novosti.
At the same time, the Kremlin also commented on the incident. They called the news about the damage to the gas pipeline alarming, but added that they do not yet have technical information. The Kremlin will wait for more detailed data, said Russian Presidential Press Secretary Dmitry Peskov, RBC reports. “We know that dangerous precedents for carrying out terrorist attacks against critical infrastructure in the Baltic have already been created,” Peskov added, referring to the explosions at Nord Stream and Nord Stream 2, which occurred at the end of September last year. Germany, Sweden and Denmark are investigating the explosion of gas pipelines, while the Russian Foreign Ministry notes that Moscow is “not allowed” into the investigation.
Let us recall that on October 10, the Norwegian seismological service NORSAR reported on October 10 that it had detected a probable explosion on the night of October 8 in the Baltic Sea in the area of the Balticconnector gas pipeline. Finnish President Sauli Niinistö said the likely leak was the result of external influence. Finnish authorities suspected Russia of influencing the pipeline.
