The climate changes brought about by the El Niño Phenomenon (FEN) have caused products such as blueberries, avocados and mangoes to reduce their harvest by more than 50%, 20% and 75%, respectively, in 2023, compared to 2022. which would generate a reduction in labor, warned the president of the Association for Sustainable Agricultural Development (ADAS), Yuri Armas Peña. “This scenario will worsen due to these climatic phenomena that the entire coastal strip of Peru is currently experiencing. Consequently, this situation is generating a decrease in the production and harvest of crops, which generates a drastic reduction in labor compared to last year’s levels in the agroindustrial sector,” said Armas.

In that sense, in order to ensure the well-being of thousands of families that depend on agribusiness, he called for “immediate and urgent action” to the national government to carry out a plan to reactivate the private investment, given the damage to crops and the production of emblematic fruits generated by the FEN. “The FEN has been causing damage to crops and the production of emblematic fruits, and thereby affecting the formal employment that institutions such as ADAS and its associated companies have been promoting in a sustained manner and with social contributions for thousands of families,” Armas explained.
