Yerevan appealed to the ECHR with a demand to oblige Baku to release the arrested ex-leaders of the NKR

Armenia’s representative on international legal issues, Yeghishe Kirakosyan, appealed to the European Court of Human Rights with a demand to oblige Azerbaijan to release all arrested ex-leaders of the unrecognized Nagorno-Karabakh Republic (NKR).

“The Representative for International Legal Affairs appealed to the ECHR on the basis of Rule 39 of the Rules of Court in order to ensure the protection of the rights guaranteed by Articles 2 and 3 of the European Convention of all representatives of the former and current leadership of Nagorno-Karabakh, also demanding that Azerbaijan oblige them to immediately release them,” the office said Representative office of Armenia on international legal issues.

Kirakosyan also asked the court to oblige Azerbaijan to “provide information about all prisoners of war and civilians under its control and provide complete data,” Interfax reports.

Earlier, the State Security Service of Azerbaijan reported that the former heads of the unrecognized Nagorno-Karabakh Republic Arkady Ghukasyan, Bako Sahakyan, Araik Harutyunyan, and the head of the NKR parliament David Ishkhanyan were charged under a number of articles of the Criminal Code. Among those arrested are also former State Minister of the unrecognized republic Ruben Vardanyan, former Foreign Minister David Babayan, former deputy army commander David Manukyan, and former Defense Minister Levon Mnatsakanyan.
