During the plenary session in Strasbourg, the European Parliament adopted a resolution on the need to review relations between the EU and Azerbaijan and introduce sanctions in connection with the situation in Nagorno-Karabakh.
The document states that such measures must be taken “taking into account recent events and the deteriorating human rights situation in the country.” The European Commission is being demanded to “quickly review” the strategic partnership with Baku in the field of energy for “violation of international obligations by Azerbaijan.” In particular, it is proposed to reduce dependence on imports of gas and oil from Azerbaijan and completely abandon these supplies “in the event of military aggression or hybrid attacks against Armenia.”
MPs also call for the suspension of negotiations on a partnership agreement with the EU until “Azerbaijan demonstrates that it is truly prepared to respect the rights and security concerns of the Armenian population of Nagorno-Karabakh.” In addition, they insist on refusing to simplify the visa regime and lowering the level of cooperation in some areas in light of “unacceptable comments and threats against MPs” from the Azerbaijani authorities.
In addition to the above measures, parliamentarians call on the EU and member states to introduce individual sanctions against members of the Azerbaijani government allegedly “responsible for numerous violations of the ceasefire and human rights in Nagorno-Karabakh”, as well as to offer all necessary assistance to Armenia to cope with the influx of refugees from Nagorno-Karabakh and the subsequent humanitarian crisis.
