Expert Villanov called failures in the operation of Xiaomi gadgets natural
Interruptions in the operation of Xiaomi smart home gadgets are a natural occurrence when updating software on servers, said blogger Sergei Vilyanov, an expert in the field of digital technology and services. In a conversation with Lenta.ru, the specialist spoke about a possible alternative that eliminates interruptions due to server problems.
“Such failures will absolutely always happen, and we need to treat this philosophically. The only alternative to insure against failures is to switch to a “smart home” based on the ZigBee protocol, which allows you to use it without the Internet. Otherwise, there are no recipes, you just need to be patient,” Villanov said.
According to him, the massive malfunctions in the operation of Xiaomi gadgets that occurred in October are explained by a software update.
“The infrastructure of Xiaomi and other manufacturers of smart gadgets is very well developed and is provided by a variety of suppliers. The software that controls specific devices is also very different. If you now look at what the maintenance software on servers looks like, you can imagine it as a patchwork quilt. When another module is added, it is almost impossible to predict how it will affect the remaining modules. Yesterday, obviously, there was an upgrade in the system: the peak of failures occurred just at the moment when it was midnight in China, and this is a typical time for installing an upgrade,” added the Lenta.ru interlocutor.

In early October, owners of Xiaomi gadgets from Russia and Belarus began to complain about problems with the devices. Owners of robotic vacuum cleaners, kettles, light bulbs, routers, cameras, doorbells and other smart home devices could not use the devices as usual.
The largest number of error messages appeared on the evening of October 4th. Residents of Moscow, St. Petersburg, Novosibirsk, Krasnodar and other Russian cities experienced problems logging into the application and managing gadgets. Also, Russians could not log into their personal account on the Xiaomi website. Attempts to restart or reinstall the software or activate the VPN led to nothing. By the morning of October 5, the problem was partially corrected.
