Lviv deputies failed to rename Russia Muscovy, and Russians – Muscovites

The deputies of the Lviv Regional Council did not have enough votes to appeal to the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine with a demand to “restore historical justice” and rename Russia Muscovy. Only 26 people voted “for”. The meeting of the regional council, where this decision was discussed, was broadcast on the official YouTube channel of the regional council.

This initiative was put forward by the Samopomich faction.

The document stated that “the north-eastern neighbor, constantly encroaching on our territory, illegally uses the stolen state and geographical name -“ Russia ”. According to its authors, after the victory over Sweden and the conclusion of the Nishtad peace treaty on October 22, 1721, Peter I renamed the Muscovy to Russia and proclaimed himself emperor, while initially “the Greek name“ Rus ”was used only for the territory of present-day Central Ukraine”.

“We, the deputies of the Lviv Regional Council, appeal to the President of Ukraine and the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine with a demand to restore historical justice and in the future use the historical name Muscovy instead of the names Russia and the Russian Federation at the state, official, public levels, as well as in the mass media on the territory Ukraine, – said in the text quoted by the Ukrainian edition “Focus”. – In relation to citizens of the Russian Federation, accordingly, the name “Muscovites” will be used.

Previously, a similar initiative, which also ended unsuccessfully, was made by the people’s deputy from the Servant of the People faction Nikita Poturayev. He also suggested calling the Russian language “Russian”.
