More than 20 prominent Russians called for the release of Vardanyan, detained by the Azerbaijani authorities

Russian cultural, scientific and educational figures signed an open letter in support of businessman and former Minister of State of Nagorno-Karabakh Ruben Vardanyan, who was detained by the Azerbaijani authorities while trying to leave Nagorno-Karabakh, writes RBC.

The authors of the appeal called for Vardanyan to be given “the opportunity to reunite with his family and return to creative work for the benefit of people.”

In total, the appeal was signed by 22 people, including the former head of the presidential administration, and now the chairman of the board of directors of the Moscow School of Management, Alexander Voloshin, businessmen Mikhail Kusnirovich and Mark Kurtser, directors Pavel Lungin and Alexander Sokurov, Natalia Solzhenitsyna, founder of the Vera hospice fund. Nyuta Federmesser, choreographer Boris Eifman, former director of the State Museum of Fine Arts. A.S. Pushkin Marina Loshak, Dean of the Faculty of Economics of Moscow State University Alexander Auzan and others.

Vardanyan was detained by Azerbaijani special services on September 27 while trying to leave Nagorno-Karabakh for Armenia along with numerous refugees. In Baku, he is accused of financing terrorism, creating and participating in the activities of illegal armed groups, as well as illegally crossing the border.
